Music teachers are tasked with developing musical skills. But in interactions with students, it is also increasingly important that teachers support student wellness as they develop musical skill. And while pedagogies abound to guide teachers in this, often those pedagogies are not spoken about in depth during teacher preparation courses or professional development. In this course, participants will examine pedagogies of care such as Culturally Responsive Pedagogy and Universal Design for Learning. We will examine the philosophies of these pedagogies and quickly place the theories into classroom application revealing practical teaching strategies that center the student in music classrooms. It is the aim of this course that you return to your classroom with concrete strategies to encourage a classroom culture that values empathy and student agency while making music together.
