Dr. Ed Meyer is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy and provides professional development workshops for teachers at a variety of grade levels.
Ed worked as a research scientist for Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) for ten years. While there, he provided numerous workshops on problem-solving at a few different ICI sites. He also became a recruiter and interviewed hundreds of fresh college graduates to uncover their ability to think hard to come up with creative solutions to solve challenging problems that they have never seen before.
In 2002, Ed developed the first for-credit courses on problem solving that were offered at any university anywhere. He has previously presented at TEDx, giving a talk titled, “Preparing Today’s Youth to Solve Tomorrow’s Problems” and has had two original problems produced by TedED, including “Can You Solve the Seven Planets Riddle?” and “Can You Solve the Demon Dance Party Riddle?”
When German publishing giant Springer wanted to publish book on how to teach Problem Solving, they recruited Ed and several colleagues from the University of Adelaide in Australia. He then spent a sabbatical there writing the book, Guide to Teaching Puzzle-Based Learning, while providing guest lectures at the University.
Ed has authored or coauthored numerous books on critical thinking and problem solving, a list of which is available on his website and has provided problem solving workshops in industry at Steris Corporation, Gateway Engineering, Rockwell International, Master Builders, and Ravago.
